Noorwegen. Ik heb er een haat-liefde verhouding mee. Ik kom er regelmatig en moet altijd wennen aan De Noor. Stug, liever 1 woord in plaats van 2. Humor? Na jaren van vakanties in Zweden – Zuid Franse zomers zijn mij te warm en het gras is te dor – ging ik 2 jaar geleden voor het eerst met mijn lieve schat en twee dochters naar Noorwegen. De boot naar Oslo. De tent opgezet aan een watertje vlakbij Gvarv.
De dagen erna: 30 tot 38 graden. In Noorwegen worden de warmste temperaturen ooit gemeten. Kinderen blij. Mijn lieve schat blij. De dametjes zwemmen, zij leest het ene boek na het andere. Ik ben gelukkig met een huurkajak en ik vis me suf. Vangen doe ik niets; de snoek ligt natuurlijk ook ergens in een hoekje te puffen. Ontspannen is het wel. Is vakantie daar niet voor bedacht?
Na vier dagen hebben we ons genoeg ontspannen. We pakken de boel in en vertrekken naar de Hadrangervidda. De kou op de hoogvlakte is welkom; op sommige plekken ligt zelfs nog sneeuw. We zetten de tent in het wild op. De buren staan een paar honderd meter verder. We kijken uit op een snel stromend riviertje dat voor onze watervoorziening zorgt. Het is knudjestoptijd. Een groot deel van de dag brengen we door met anti-steekbeestjes burka’s op het hoofd. Dit vinden we echt leuk! En dan die Lemmingen. Ze zien er schattig uit, maar wat kunnen die beestjes schreeuwen.
Afgelopen najaar was ik weer in Noorwegen. Dit keer was ik er met vriend en fotograaf Allart Blaauboer. Geen vakantie, maar in opdracht van SNP om een video over het Sognefjord te maken. Nu ben ik natuurlijk verplicht iets te zeggen over hoe mooi het er allemaal is en dat je er allemaal leuke dingen kan doen. Helaas, zo zit ik niet elkaar.
Van de vier dagen hadden we twee dagen regen. Stromende regen. We hebben gewandeld en gefietst. Helaas niet gekajakt, daar was het weer echt te slecht voor. We hebben wel in een – niet geheel milieuvriendelijke – Ridged Inflatable Boat gezeten en over het Fjord geblazen en zeehonden gezien. We bieden onze mede passagiers bij deze nogmaals onze excuses aan voor de wateroverlast. Allart vond het nodig de kunststof ‘glasplaat’ voor de boot weg te halen om beter te kunnen filmen. De striemende regen leverde na drie uur varen bij iedereen een roodgloeiend speldenprikkengezicht op. En die waterdichte pakken: echt niet, tot op mijn onderbroek doorweekt. Topavontuur dus.
Ter milieu compensatie hebben we ook een tocht gemaakt met de grootste en fonkel nagel neue elektrische veerpont ter wereld. Het schip was nog niet gedoopt, maar ik hou wel van een uitdaging. Binnen heerlijk warm, voldoende te eten en te drinken en vooral: STILTE! Je hoort alleen de wind als je over het water zoeft. Dit is de toekomst!
Het mooiste moet nog komen. Een wandeling naar de Hardangerjøkulen gletsjer. We zijn de enige. Niet zo gek: de storm der stormen is voorspeld en een verstandige Noor zit lekker warm binnen. In het hotel doen we navraag of de tocht te doen is. ‘De laatste groep zei vorige week dat de bruggen er nog waren’, meldt de vrolijke receptioniste. Waren… de regen van de laatste dagen zou de bruggen ook weggeslagen kunnen hebben. Hier houd ik van. Als we koud 15 minuten onderweg zijn vraagt Allart ‘waar het pad naar het betonnen platform met rvs railing en uitzicht over de gletsjer is’. We lopen op het pad, er is geen betonnen platform en al helemaal geen railing. En de gletsjer is nog drie uur lopen. Dit is Noorwegen: puur, onbedorven en vol uitdagingen. Wat een fijn land!
En als je er toch bent
- Ga met de Flåmsbana of Flå In antiek ogende rijtuigen maak je een prachtige tocht over een van de steilste spoorstukken ter wereld.
- Bezoek Flåm en maak een tocht met de elektrische ferry. Hopelijk liggen er cruiseschepen in de haven.
- Drink een drankje in de panorama kamer van het Finse1222 hotel. Het uitzicht is super.
- Ga kajakken in het Sognefjord. Het kan vanuit Flåm en is zoveel beter dan een snelle motorboot.
- Bezoek Undredal. Er wonen 80 mensen en 300 geiten en ze hebben een kaasfestival. Verder staat er een practige staafkerk.
